Plates for plate carriers

Nowadays wars require maximal protection of vital areas of the human body. Injuries and wounds resulting from shrapnel hits account for a significant portion of injuries among soldiers. That is why armor plates are becoming extremely relevant for soldiers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and other military units participating in hostilities. 

What the ballistic plates are?

Ceramic armor plates or soft ballistic panels are protective elements inserted into a plate carrier. They may be made of steel, ceramic or Kevlar and provide additional protection to the user's body from mechanical damage and wounds that can be caused by bladed weapons, shots, bullets of various calibres and shell fragments.
You should choose armour protection taking into account the model of your plate carrier and the shape of the slots for the plates: some plate carriers are designed only for plates with bevelled upper corners.

Levels of protective plates for body armor

The protection level of armor plates determines their resistance level to ballistic threats. In Ukraine, DSTU 8782:2018 is in force, establishing protection levels and test methods for body armor and individual armor components, including armor plates. According to this standard, armor plates are divided into 6 protection levels.

• 1st level. Protects against calibre bullets 9x18 mm (PM), bullet 57-N-181s (velocity 335±10 m/s) and 9x19 mm (Parabellum) FMJ RN SC (velocity 400±10 m/s) at a distance of 5 m.
• 2nd level. Protects against calibre bullets 7.62 x 25 mm, (7.62 x 25 Tokarev) 57-N-134s (velocity 430±15 m/s) at a distance of 5 m.
• 3rd level. Protects against calibre bullets 5.45 x 39 mm 7N6 (velocity 910±15 m/s) and 7.62 x 39 mm 57-N-231 (velocity 730±15 m/s) at a distance of 10 m.
• 4th level. Protects against calibre bullets 5.45 x 39 mm 7N10 (velocity 910±15 m/s) 7.62 x 54 mm 57-N-232s (velocity 850±15 m/s) at a distance of 10 m.
• 5th level. Protects against calibre bullets 7.62 x 39 mm 57-BZ-231 (velocity 745 ± 15 m/s) and 7.62 x 54 mm 57-N-232s (velocity 850 ± 15 m/s) at a distance of 10 m.
• 6th level. Protects against 7.62 x 54 mm 7B3-323 bullets (velocity 850±15 m/s) at a distance of 10 m.

According to DSTU standards, armor plates of the declared level must be resistant to damage by calibres that can withstand plates of lower classes. That is, 4th-level armor plates must withstand hits from calibres that can withstand the previous 3 levels.
