Kevlar vest vs plate carrier: what is the difference?

At first glance, these two protective elements are almost identical and have the same appearance and function. However, there are several differences between a vest and a plate carrier:

1. Design features. Firstly, the military bulletproof vest is a one-piece made from ballistic materials such as Kevlar or Dyneema ensuring protection from bullets and shrapnel without additional plates. The plate carrier is only a frame, a case in which the armor plates are inserted to provide ballistic protection. Plate carriers are usually made of durable synthetic materials such as Cordura, and have a modular design, allowing the user to adjust them according to their needs: adding various pouches, pockets and other gear elements.   
2. Different functionality. Plate carriers are created primarily for military use because thanks to the velcro panels, MOLLE and removable cummerbunds, you can assemble them yourself, adapting them to your needs. Although some Kevlar vests having similar similar functionality, there are also models, designed for concealed wearing with no ability to mount any additional gear.   
3. Weight. Bulletproof vests are typically heavier than plate carriers due to their one-piece construction. Plate carriers can be lighter and more mobile, which makes them the best choice for situations where high mobility is required.

In general, a bulletproof vest is a means of protection more oriented towards law enforcement officers, while a plate carrier, having high functionality, is more often used by the military.
